Maine Maritime Academy Mariners Cruise Past Vikings in Home Opener

Maine Maritime men's lacrosse beat Salem State 28-1 in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. Jayden Wilson (Lewiston, Maine) tallied four goals, reaching 100 career goals.

 

How it Happened: After a scoreless six and a half minutes of play, Jacob Hintermaier (Macon, Ga.) put the Mariners on the board off a pass from Alex Stevens (South Portland, Maine). Maine Maritime proceeded to dominate the first half, scoring 15 goals going into the half.

 

The second half was more of the same action with Maine Maritime continuing to dominate. Salem State scored once in the fourth quarter breaking the shutout to make the score 28-1 at the end of play.

 

Inside the Numbers:

  • Hintermaier led all scorers with five goals while dishing out three assists and causing two turnovers.
  • Wilson tallied four goals, reaching 100 career goals, with two assists and four ground balls.
  • Steven also had four goals along with two assists and two ground balls
  • Three Mariners each had two goals, while nine other Mariners each had one goal.
  • Jed Astbury (Bridgewater, Vt.) went 23-26 from the x and tallied 17 ground balls.
  • Myles Despres scored the only goal for Salem State.
  • Garrett Ruszkowski (Saugus, Mass.) got the win for Maine Maritime, making four saves, while Trevor Gilligan tallied 16 saves for the Vikings.
  • The Mariners held a 64-18 advantage in shots and a 58-17 edge in ground balls.

Notables:

  • Wilson had four goals today, reaching the 100 career goals milestone.
