Maine Maritime Academy Mariners Win Judges Invitational Tournament

Maine Maritime women's basketball took down Brandeis University, 67-59 to win the championship at the Judges Invitational Tournament. Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) led the Mariners with a game-high 18 points, shooting 7-for-7 from the floor, 10 rebounds, and one assist.

 

How it Happened: After knotted at seven to seven in the first quarter, the Mariners went on a 16-5 run to create some separation from the Judges. Kirsten Grindel (Brandon, Fla.) nailed a jumper for the Mariners to end the quarter with a 10-point lead. The Judges and Mariners battled hard in the second quarter, with a score of 41-31 at halftime.

 

The Judges came out strong in the third quarter, getting within seven points of the Mariners. It got even closer in the fourth, with the Judges closing within five points of Maine Maritime. Strong free throw shooting from the Mariners down the stretch carried the way as they took the 67-59 victory.

 

Inside the Numbers:

  • Plissey had a game-high 18 points, shooting 7-for-7 from the floor, 10 rebounds, and one assist.
  • Grace Huntwork (Gretna, Nebraska) shot 60% from the floor for 15 points and snagged two rebounds to add on her already impressive freshmen campaign.
  • Lauren Cook (Charlotte, Maine) added 14 points to the mix along with three rebounds.
  • Sydney Briscoe (Englewood, N.J.) recorded a game-high 11 rebounds to go with six points, two steals, one block, and an assist.
  • Caitlin Gresko had a team-high 13 points for the Judges, while Francesca Marchese had nine.
  • Shannon Smally brought down six rebounds for Brandeis.
