Maine Maritime's Benjamin Butterfield (Phillips, Maine) has been named the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Men's Cross Country Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year. Butterfield is joined by teammate, John Hassett (Castine, Maine) on the NAC First Team All-Conference, while Ponce Saltysiak (Bar Harbor, Maine) earned a spot on the NAC Second Team. William Procko (Branford, Fla.) landed on the NAC Sportsmanship Team.
Butterfield, a Marine Systems Engineering major, currently holds a 3.93 grade point average. He earned the Mariners Athletics Elite 8 award as a junior, which recognizes the top academic performers in each class, and earned All-Academic Team honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Butterfield earned NAC weekly honors twice during his athletic career, and was a First Team All-NAC performer this season by virtue of his sixth-place finish in the NAC championship meet.
Hassett, a Marine Biology major, appeared in seven races for the Mariners this season. He led his team to a third place finish in the NAC Championship with his best time of the season, 27:00.5 on the 8K course, earning a personal fifth place finish.
Saltysiak, a Marine Transportation Operations major, appeared in all eight races for Maine Maritime. Saltysiak posted his best time of the season at the UMass-Dartmouth Invite with a time of 26:55.00 on the 8K course.
Procko, a Marine Transportation Operations major, finished in 23rd at the NAC Championship for the Mariners, with a time of 29:05.6. The NAC Men's Cross Country Sportsmanship Team is reserved for those who have distinguished themselves through demonstrated acts of sportsmanship and ethical behavior. The honorees positively affect the men's cross country culture and match environment by clearly demonstrating sportsmanship and integrity beyond the sport playing rules and etiquette.
