Maine Maritime Academy Rich, Smith, and Melampy Earn NAC Weekly Honors

Maine Maritime's Sydney Rich (Williamsburg, Va.) has been named the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, while Ila Smith (Lexington, Ky.) was named the Rookie of the Week, and Rachel Melampy (Duxbury, Mass.) was named the Player of the Week.

 

Rich continues to be a constant for the Mariners on the defensive end, totaling 74 digs against four non-conference opponents. Rich started the week with a game-high 13 digs against UMaine-Fort Kent. She followed up on Friday against Keuka College with 14 digs, a game-high eight aces, and one assist. Rich continued on Saturday with a game-high 22 digs, four assists, and one ace against New England College, then tallied a game-high 25 digs and three assists against UMass-Boston to finish the week.

 

Smith helped lead the Mariners to a 4-0 week, hitting over .400 with 41 kills against four non-conference opponents. The first-year recorded 11 kills, on .450 hitting, three block assists, and two digs against UMaine-Fort Kent on Tuesday night. Later in the week, Smith tallied five kills and three blocks against Keuka College on Friday night. She followed up on Saturday against New England College with 14 kills, hitting .400 and three block assists, then against UMass-Boston with 11 kills, hitting an impressive .588, one dig, and two block assists.

 

Melampy recorded a total of 88 kills, hitting .426 to lead the Mariners to another undefeated week against four strong non-conference opponents. The senior put up a game-highs of 23 kills and 20 digs against UMaine-Fort Kent in a five-set match on Tuesday night. She followed up on Friday night against Keuka College with a game-high 19 kills, hitting .471, 10 digs, three assists, and one block. Melampy ended the week with a game-high 25 kills, eight digs, and two aces against New England College and another game-high 21 kills, 14 digs, two aces, and one assist against UMass-Boston.
