May is Mental Health Awareness Month
The UMaine Machias Counseling Center is raising awareness about mental health to reduce the stigma often associated with it. This year, the counseling center supplied seed packets to those in the UMaine Machias campus community. The packets contained sunflower (national flower for depression) seeds, national statistics on mental health and an inspirational message to reduce the stigma.
This past fall, the counseling center along with the help of Dr. Gayle Kraus and students planted yellow tulips around campus. The tulips formed Hope Gardens as part of the Yellow Tulip Project. Keep an eye out for “Hope Garden” signs around campus. Pictured here are students with the sprouting tulips this year.
Yellow tulips are a sign of hope. When communities come together, plant a garden, get their hands dirty, and talk about mental illness, hope blooms.
