April 1st is the annual application deadline date for all property tax exemptions in Maine. Homeowners must apply in writing to their local Assessor.  There are two primary exemptions available to residents. The HOMESTEAD Exemption and the VETERANS Exemption.  The HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION reduces your yearly tax bill by about $475 in Ellsworth and is available to all homeowners who have their primary residence here in Maine,.

The VETERANS EXEMPTION is for veterans, age 62 or older, who served during a war time period. This tax relief can save veterans about $100 a year in Ellsworth. To qualify you must provide proof of being honorably discharged (your DD214 discharge paper). A widow, widower, minor child or widowed parent of a veteran may also apply.  In Ellsworth, taxpayers receiving approval for both the HOMESTEAD and VETERANS exemptions would get about $575 off their tax bill every year.  You only need to apply once. The exemptions carry forward every year. For an application please contact Ellsworth City Hall at 667-2563.
