Medicaid spending for national code services increased 14.1% in East Machias for 2024

In 2024, Medicaid providers in East Machias billed $619,224 for services in the National Codes Established for State Medicaid Agencies category, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Spending database. This represented a 14.1% rise from 2023, when claims totaling $542,475 were submitted for the same services.

Medicaid operates as a public health insurance program managed by the states and funded jointly by federal and state sources. It provides coverage for low-income people and families, seniors, children and individuals with disabilities, making it a central component of U.S. health care.

Since Medicaid expenditures are sourced from taxpayers, shifts in local billing levels illustrate how health coverage funds are used within the community.

The “National Codes Established for State Medicaid Agencies” group covers a set of Medicaid-billed services identified by their care type, based on HCPCS and CPT code groupings. The analysis assigns each billing code to one service category using fixed code prefixes and ranges, allowing similar services to be reviewed together to help maintain accurate comparisons and rankings across years without duplicate counts.

While Medicaid outlays rose across several categories, National Codes Established for State Medicaid Agencies led East Machias in 2024 for total Medicaid payments.

Although these category-specific Medicaid payments covered services citywide, the majority were found in a small number of ZIP codes. In 2024, ZIP code 04630 alone generated $619,224 in Medicaid payments under this group, accounting for 100% of East Machias’s total for the year.

Within this category, payment activity was concentrated among relatively few specific billing codes.

During the same period, Medicaid payments for this group in East Machias saw a 14.1% increase from 2023 to 2024, compared with a 12.5% shift across all Medicaid claim groups citywide.
