FOIA Request to University of Maine at Machias regarding recent course syllabi on August 6, 2025.

The Down East Times has submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the University of Maine at Machias seeking access to course syllabi for all undergraduate and graduate courses offered during the Spring 2025 semester. The request was made under the Maine Freedom of Access Act § 402 et seq., with a preference for receiving the information in electronic format.

The request specifically asks for a complete list of syllabi from all departments, schools, and colleges within the university, including courses delivered in-person, online, or through hybrid formats. Additionally, the requester seeks associated metadata such as course titles and numbers, instructor names, department or academic unit affiliations, and details about the course delivery format.

As part of their journalistic duties to provide transparency and hold public institutions accountable, Down East Times is seeking this information to inform the public. They have also requested a fee waiver citing their role as media professionals. The requestor is affiliated with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, which supports media organizations in investigating governmental agencies using Freedom of Information laws.
